South Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 26,847 at the 2010 census. South Pasadena is also the namesake of South Pasadena Municipal Airport. The area that now makes up South Pasadena was first inhabited by the Tongva people and was part of their lands ceded to Mexico in 1821. A Mexican land grant called Rancho San Pedro de la Cueva was given to José Antonio Nieto in 1856. The name "South Pasadena" was given to the town by General James Halleck on September 12, 1881, during his visit to Southern California. The early years of South Pasadena were difficult as it competed with adjacent Los Angeles for water rights. In 1895, local farmers organized a irrigation company and built two reservoirs which provided water for South Pasadena until 1912 when new interests bought the water rights and discontinued use. In 1915, Harry Hughes founded Hughes Aircraft Company on Long Island City Boulevard east of downtown Los Angeles and soon produced planes such as the Piper Cub and Curtiss JN-4J Wildcat fighter planes. Hughes started production at his hangar on Long Island City Boulevard and named his company after himself - Northrop Aviation Corporation Ltd.. Northrop Aviation Corporation Ltd., later renamed Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Incorporated (LMA), became one of America's largest aerospace companies with over $100 billion in market value as of 2016 and employs approximately 135,000 people worldwide across seventeen businesses including Missiles & Rockets, Aeronautics & Space Intelligence Agency (NASA), Information Technology Services (IT services), Applied Research Laboratories (ARL) – developing advanced technologies for missile defense systems – all within four decades!
