When the United States Army moved into South San Francisco in 1846, they were preceded by a local militia. The first U.S. military presence in San Francisco was tiny, consisting of a detachment of three companies from Fort Point on the Golden Gate Bridge. The fort was abandoned in 1847 and not used again until 1861 when it became the temporary base for General Winfield Scott’s forces during the Mexican-American War. The new Presidio of South San Francisco was founded on November 3, 1849 by Commodore John Dye with land donated by José Joaquin de Arguelles y Menéndez de Avilés and others. Army equipment and supplies arrived gradually over time and were often inadequate or even nonexistent. In 1860, Union forces under General Don Carlos Manuel Fuentes occupied South San Francisco after their victory at Palo Alto against Mexican troops commanded by Captain Sepúlveda. As American soldiers there began to receive better weapons and ammunition, Santa Clara County voted to establish an 8-mile line around the city limits contingent upon military support being rendered effective within that boundary; this measure never materialized due to budgetary difficulties encountered by both County officials and the Union army commanders during the war years. On September 10th, 1862, Confederate forces under General Pacheco attack Union positions along what is now Polk Street between Third Street and Fourth Streets; this battle resulted in heavy losses for both sides with over 150 casualties on our side alone including someprominent citizens such as Govan (Cal.) Senator Benjamin Foulke (D), Drury (Cal.), Mrs. Higginson (Wash.), Wm Gifford & Sons (Calif.), etc., while 5 Confederate Captives escapedMexican captivity with assistance from various nameless individuals…. The end result of these engagements was that no significant damage or loss occurred within town limits; however much damage had been done adjacent to Spanish Mission District where numerous buildings had been destroyed or taken down completely….. By 1865 most of south san francisco had reverted back to Mexican hands….. However civilian control continued until just after1865 when private ownership resumed following revolts throughout California led by former soldiers…. finally SouthSanFrancisco returned fully under U S military occupation on February 22d 1863…. In 1865 General Mariano Castro attacked American forces at Palo Alto during their attempt to relieve Santa Clara from Spanish control; Castro's forces were repulsed and he withdrew his army across the bay to south San Francisco where he found refuge with Mexican troops underMexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Santa Anna surrendered Palo Alto to Ulysses S Grant minutes after its fall which ended overland travel through central California for Californians until then only possible by stagecoach or wagon train over badlands covered with chaparral and saltbush; sporadic attacks by Native Americans had been common since before gold rushes began some 40 years earlier when prospectors discovered large veins of silver ore near what is now Union City When electric lights were introduced into San Francisco in1898, one local man named Elisha Gray built an elevator system to carry passengers upescalator leading from Market Street (now Embarcadero) to 14th Street (now Powell Street).Gray also built our current Municipal Building on Post St., now part of City Hall Annex
