The Coast Guard has been in South San Francisco since the early 1800s. The first organized coast guard detachment was established on December 12, 1847, at the foot of Stockton Street. The first captain of the company was Captain George W. Purdy. In 1852, a new station was built at Market and Mission Streets and called “Beach House” because it was located on a beach that served as their base of operations. In 1865, the Navy purchased land from the City of South San Francisco for $1,000 to create what is now known as Point Reyes National Seashore. This area became part of the Coast Guard District No. 2 which included South San Francisco Bay Area. In 1924, District No. 1 became part of Coast Guard District No 6 which included all coastal counties in California except Santa Barbara County and Monterey County which were within District No 3- also headquartered in South San Francisco (although Monterey County airspace extended into Point Reyes National Seashore). In 1946, Headquarters moved from Fort Mason to Point Reyes Station due to budgetary constraints and closed down Beach House in 1952; however, it reopened as a museum in 1984 with displays about local history associated with the Coast Guard including artifacts from Beacheside Inn and Kneeling Stone Chapel located nearby on Upper Mission Street between Soquel Avenue and Castro Street.) At present there arefour detachments stationed throughout Southern California responsible for Search and Rescue missions during storms or emergencies such as floods or earthquakes; Lifeboat Operations; Naval Gunfire Control Squadron THREE HUNDRED FOURteen; Helicopter Patrol Squadron ONE HUNDRED EIGHTeen (HPS-19) Howitzers flying out daily from Hunters Point Naval Air Station North Island);and Aviation Patrol Squadron TWELVE EIGHTeen (APS-18). Additionally there are special assignments such as those assigned to Joint Forces Special Operations Commandresponsible for conducting counterterrorism operations worldwide under Title 10 United States Code Section 811 et seq.).
