In 1835, Temperance Ayer purchased the land from Reyes and developed it into a town called Trinidad. On July 4, 1846, Mexican president Vicente Guerrero announced that all Californios were to be united under one government and decided that Trinidad should become the capital of southern California. On October 17 of that year, Mexico lost control of California to United States forces during the Mexican–American War. The town was sacked by American troops on December 12 and 14 and its citizens fled to Santa Clara County. The town was rebuilt as an agricultural community with a small population and ceased operations in 1865.
