The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Program has been a tradition in South San Francisco, California for over fifty years. The program gives Marines and their families the opportunity to send gifts to loved ones deployed with the military. This year, we are celebrates our sixth anniversary of the program. The gift history program began as a way for Marines and their families to show support during deployments. Now, it provides an opportunity for family members to get close with their loved ones while they are away from home. Through the gift history program, Marines and their families can connect and learn about one another’s lives. This year, we have a special Edition of the Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Program. South San Francisco, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Treasure Coast of California and is bordered by Hayward to the north, Palo Alto to the east, Fremont to the south, and Santa Clara Valley to the west. The earliest permanent residents of South San Francisco were Native Americans who camped near Point Reyes Station on Mayaguez Bay in 1795. The town was founded by John Houstoun and James Irvine as part of a land grant they received from Spain in 1843. It became an agricultural center with cotton production becoming dominant after 1850. The arrival of railroad passengers in 1870 made South San Francisco an important transportation hub for workers traveling between northern California and southern Mexico. In 1915, during World War I, South San Francisco joined forces with other American cities (among them Alameda and Oakland) to form the United States Air Forces Base area which served as a training ground for pilots during World War I. After World War II ended, South San Francisco declined as aerospace industry growth eclipsed its commercial importance. However, it regained some prosperity through new housing development and office projects beginning in 1965; this period also saw significant revitalization of downtown streetscape and nightlife alongSan Miguel Street/. However, most recently South San Francisco has experienced gentrification with increasing concentrations of high-end businesses along Market Street (the "Market Street Revitalization Project" began in 2016). This has led to increased crime rates within the city limits as well as violence against ethnic minorities such as Latinos or people who look different from mainstream society
