The town was founded in 1851 by Anglo-Americans and it quickly became a center of trade and commerce. As the years went on, South San Francisco's growing population required more space, so businesses began to build warehouses and stores on hills overlooking the harbor. This created problems for local farmers who couldn't get access to adequate land to store their goods. So, military gifts were an important part of the town's economy during these times. One of the first stores in South San Francisco was called The Depot. It was built on Market Street between 36th and 37th Streets circa 1892-93 as a place where soldiers could purchase supplies and ammunition for their service in Mexico. The Depot sold everything from cannons to rifles to uniforms. In 1902, Captain John Sutter bought the land that now makes up South San Francisco from Rancho Rincon de la Costa owners José de Jesús y Covarrubias y Luna and his wife Teresa de Jesús y Covarrubias. Captain Sutter donated this land to the city in order to create a public square which would become known as Zócalo (meaning "Square" in Spanish). In 1909, Mayor George Geary dedicated Zócalo as central business district for South San Francisco. The city also built two large armories next door on 38th Avenue between First Street Extension and Second Street Extension around 1916-17; these armories were used by both World War I (1914-18) and World War II (1939-45). A number of other businesses grew up around Zócalo over time including Butchers' Bazaar which operated from 1911 until 1926; Bagatelle Bookstore which opened in 1913; Girdershark Store which opened in 1922; Lighthouse Grill & Bar which opened its doors in 1946; North Beach Bakery & Restaurantopened its doors in 1951;and ABC News Headquarters Annex opened its doors in 1972

The city of South San Francisco was founded by the Comanches in 1849. The area that now makes up South San Francisco was first occupied by the Mission Indians. From here, the Spanish began to colonize California in the 16th century and by 1821, they had founded a small town named Yerba Buena on the peninsula between San Francisco Bay and Polk Street. On December 6, 1849, Mexican nationals who had crossed over into California were met with violence in what is now downtown South San Francisco when they attempted to cross Market Street. At least 20 people were killed and many more were injured as a result of this event. As a result of this altercation, Mexico ceded California to United States control and Yerba Buena became part of US territory known as Alta California. The following year saw another altercation involving Mexican nationals which led to the death of two Californian citizens as a result of their participation in this activity. In 1850, US General James Kanyon led an expedition against Mexican forces at Rancho Rinconada near present-day Point Reyes National Seashore in order to expel them from southern California. The Mexicans retreated into central Mexico after being driven back by American troops for some time before finally surrendering on November 26th of that year. With Mexico no longer able to provide support for its southern frontier, the Americans began build Fort Point at present-day Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1850 in order to protect their colony from potential invasions from both Central America and Peru via sea lanes connecting Asia through Panama City (then called Lima) and Callao (Peru). It should be noted that during these years there was also significant tension between Anglo-Americans living within Mission walls while Mexicans lived outside those walls under full Native American control or protection; however, despite all these challenges little happened aside from sporadic skirmishes until 1861 when Confederate forces burned down Mission Dolores while Mexican troops fired upon them; subsequently resulting in the death of 14 Anglo-American soldiers including Commandant José Gomez y Uribe who skirted around ramifications leading up to this particular event
