On May 25, 1870 Vallejo dedicated a school building within the city limits to educate children from low income families about American values and English language skills so they could become successful in American life. This school eventually became known as East Side High School (now termed Martin Luther King Jr.-King High), which remains one of America's most important black high schools today. In 1898 Pacific Gas & Electric Company built its first transmission line from Hayward to Palo Alto through South San Francisco; this line linked with other lines throughout Northern California making PG&E one of the largest energy providers in California!
