South San Francisco, California is a city located in San Francisco County, California. The population was 71,451 at the 2010 census. It is the economic and cultural center of the South Bay Area and Home to many technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., Facebook, Amazon Web Services, and Intel. The downtown area is home to two hospitals- one belonging to Kaiser Permanente and one belonging to UCSF. The first inhabitants of what is now South San Francisco were Native American people who built lodges around 1795-1800 on land that now includes Golden Gate Park. European explorers discovered this area in 1776 when they explored the Bay Area for Spain. The British claimed it for Britain in 1821 and renamed it Fort Point after Admiral John Bartlett who had been commandant at Portsmouth in Hampshire England at the time. The Alameda Valley was developed by early Californians as part of their efforts to build a wagon road from Sacramento through Sonoma County into Marin County. On July 8, 1853, General Mariano Vallejo founded adobe homes called Rancho Rincon de las Pulgas near today’s Mission Dolores Cemetery on what is now Main Street south of Market Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets (now Fillmore). Over time these homes grew into what are today’s neighborhoods of Bernal Heights, Castro Valley (now part of El Sobrante), Noe Valley (now part of Hayward), Richmond Hill/ Pacific Heights/ Visitacion Hills/ Potrero Hill (partly withinSan Francisco), Winchester Beach (laterWinchester Pier) and North Beach farther north on Van Ness Avenue near Haight Street between Geary Boulevard eastward across Haight Street past City Hall before terminating at Ashbury Avenue just west of Masonic Temple.) By 1870 there were over 100 families living in South San Francisco with no public schools until Maynard Dixon opened his School District #2 school district which became SFUSD #1 in 1896 following passage by state legislators of Proposition 10 which provided funds for new schools within county limits

South San Francisco, California is located in San Francisco County and is the southernmost city in the Bay Area. The population of South San Francisco was 54,041 as of the 2010 census. The town formed from part of Alameda County on July 1, 1849. It was given its current name by General Mariano Guerra, who named it for José Santos Cruz, a Mexican general who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first permanent settlement in what would become South San Francisco was made on December 25, 1847 by citizens of Antioch and Point Reyes Station who founded a small community called Yerba Buena which later became Santa Clara Valley. American settlers began arriving in larger numbers beginning in the late 1840s after gold was discovered at Sutro Mesa northwest of Alameda City. By 1850, over 50 families had settled near what would eventually become downtown South San Francisco; many were citrus farmers and traders drawn to the area's fertile soils and mild climate. By 1851–52 there were over 100 people living in South San Francisco and businesses such as gristmills, sawmills, breweries and tanneries were being established alongMission Creek (later renamed Embarcadero) with goods transported by wagon or horseback overland to nearby Oakland. In 1853–54Captain John Fitch opened up Fitch's wharf at Mission Creek for shipping white sand beachcombers' oysters out to sea from Point Lobos Creek bed which he'd found between Russian Hill and Fremont Street south of downtown SouthSanFernando

South San Francisco was founded in 1849 by the brothers Don and Alonzo Wright. The Wrights were the first to set foot on what is now South San Francisco Peninsula, and they named their new settlement "San Francisco". In 1851, the name of the town was changed to "South San Francisco", in honor of José Cornelio Saavedra, president of Mexico at the time. The Town Square located at Third and King Streets served as its central business district for many years. The peninsula's earliest residents were Spanish-speaking Missionaries who arrived in 1821 from Sayulita, Mexico. By 1849, about 60% of all people living on the peninsula were Mexican nationals. Many of these early settlers came from Santa Clara County because that was then part of Mexico City. After California gained statehood in 1850, many American citizens began moving to South San Francisco because it became a more distant prospect for political asylum than other parts of California. One reason this area grew rapidly during this time period was that there were no laws governing land ownership or development within California until after it became a United States territory. In 1907, South San Francisco was incorporated as an independent city under U.S. law and remains one today with its own government and mayor/council system
