Stanton, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,832 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Stanton was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as a farming community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The first post office was established in Stanton on July 16, 1847. The name of the town may be derived from General James H. Stanton, who commanded an American army during the Mexican-American War and helped to drive Mexico out of California in 1846. In 1861, when California became a U.S. state, Stanton became one of its initial townships and remained so until it joined fellow Fresno County municipalities in 1959. The early settlers were primarily farmers and their families supplemented their income by trading goods with villages along the river south of Stockton for lumber and other materials needed for construction projects upstream or to ship downriver to markets in Sacramento and San Francisco Bay. By 1865, however, more than 60% of residents were employed within agricultural activities that supported local mills that produced flour, cottonseed oil, chili peppers (from Chile), shoeshine boots and other items for export to points eastward such as New York City and Boston Harbor; fishing along nearby Lake Oroville;and ranching operations supplying livestock for market across Northern California's inland valleys In 1870–71 two Mormon missionaries arrived at Stockton with instructions to proselytize among local Native Americans about Christianity’s potential benefits for them all: “to promote agriculture; open up new plains lying between our mountains and those near them” After several months preaching these messages among some 3200 Indians living around Mount Shasta (present-day Redding), they baptized over 100 individuals including 15 men – Fathers Lorenzo Snow (1812-92)and Orson Hyde (1817-84). Father Snow served as pastor at Mission Station Substation #1 before being transferred there permanently in 1875 When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill on October 24th 1850 by John Cushing (), large numbers of miners descended on Stockton looking for wealth beyond what could be found placer mining deep below ground near present day Redding Creek which included areas now known as Manteca Canyon National Wildlife Refuge & North Olmsted Creek Estuary Preserve . One miner described it this way: "I never saw anything like it - everybody shouted and buffeting each other like crazy ...
