Stanton, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is located in Stanislaus County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of San Francisco and 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Los Angeles. The town was founded on April 12th, 1849 by John D. Stanton as a result of Rancho San Antonio de Cuyamaca being acquired from Manuel Nieto by Jesse Yoakim Valentine and his wife Maria Elena Borden on October 24th, 1846. José Félix Rivera also purchased the Rancho Santa Clara de Arboles on November 16th, 1847 from Bernardino Cámpora. In 1850, James Irvine settled in Stanton with his family and began to cultivate citrus fruit trees there upon inheriting the rancho from Valentine. The first store in Stanton opened its doors in 1870 under the name "The Grapes" operated by J.M. Whitehead & Brothers. By 1886, when it had 10 stores and employed 80 people, the post office called itself "Citrusland". The first commercial development in Stanton came about when Waddell Bros., grocery dealers and wagonmakers started selling flour and other goods from their store at Eighth Street and Main Avenue in 1887; this led to local businesses forming associations to promote trade among themselves which later produced a school oldsmobile for parade purposes that year
