Stanton is a city located in the U.S. state of California, on the north side of San Joaquin Valley. The population was 128,512 at the 2010 census. The name Stanton comes from Spanish settlers' use of the word "stanza" for "a long piece of land". The first Europeans to visit what is now Stanton were fur traders and Missionaries in 1776. A post office called Stanislaus was established in 1847, and it remained in operation until 1862. The city was named for General James Halleck Stanton, who served as Governor of California from 1853 to 1857 and as Secretary of War from 1861 to 1865. In 1870, City Council voted to change the name to honor Francisco Márquez de la Torre, 3rd Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico). The discovery of oil in eastern Kern County during the 1920s led to a revival of oil production and development throughout much of California; however, most shale oil production has since ceased due to environmental concerns such as air quality impact mutations caused by hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Stanton is a city in western Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The first European settlers in what is now Stanton were Spanish colonists who landed onshore about 1805. In 1868, the town was founded as a result of an agreement between the Central Pacific Railroad and two other counties in California: San Mateo and Contra Costa. The name "Stanton" had been given to a small creek that ran through the town. A post office was established at Stanton in 1870, and by 1880 it had grown to include a population of around 100 people. In 1906, when California became an state, Stanton became part of Alameda County; however, it retained its own government until 1959 when it joined the newly formed City of Oakland. In 2002, after years of planning and $18 million in taxpayer investment, Stanton's city council approved Measure H (the Hollister Plan), which would create a new downtown district for the city with plans for mixed use development including apartments and commercial space as well as public spaces like squares and parks. The plan met with resistance from some residents who felt that their homes would be lost in such an ambitious project; but following heated community hearings that followed throughout 2006-2007, many residents came around to support both the idea of creating a new downtown district as well as voting on Measure H overwhelmingly during its second reading on November 4th 2007 by 53% to 47%. On May 5th 2008 voters passed Measure H unanimously onto their City Council agendas; this marked an important milestone for Stanton because it spelled formal incorporation into Oakland's municipal government which went into effect on July 1st 2008 under Mayor Libby Schaaf’s leadership Since then Stanton has seen rapid growth with annexed parcels reaching up to 8 acres per day – making it one of Northern California’s fastest-growing cities since 2000! With annexations coming from Emeryville (to south), Hayward (to east), Richmond (to north) and San Francisco (to west), there are now over 60 properties being developed within walking distance or less of downtown Stanton!
