Stanton is a small town in the Mono County, California, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Lake Oroville and on the border of Butte and Nevada counties. The name Stanton was given to it by Captain John C. Stanton who landed there with his party from the USS Constitution on April 17, 1847. Captain Stanton surveyed and named several small lakes in that area after himself including Big Bear Creek (renamed Lowman Creek), North Fork of Clearwater River (now known as South Fork), and East fork of Feather River (now known as Middle Fork). John C. Stanton post office was established in 1855; it closed in 1929. The first post office at Stanton opened up on October 24, 1851; it continued open until it reopened as a Wells Fargo branch office on June 15, 1907 under new management. Numerous ranchers and farmers used land near what is now Stanton for pasture or grew crops until 1915 when water rights were acquired by the Army Corps of Engineers for Oroville Dam project which cut off access to most of Mono County to settlers except those living near Highway 50 where they built ditches around their homes to avoid being flooded during construction projects such as Oroville Dam. The last remaining residents left in 1945 when war began with Japan and they were replaced by military personnel barracks which continued into 1949 when all but one building burned down leaving only an empty lot behind which became a park named after Captain John C. Stanton in 1969 followed by another name change to honor General George Sargent McCoy who served as head of Military Assistance Command Europe during World War II before becoming Governor of California in 1946

Stanton was incorporated as a town in 1849, and it became a city in 1893. The city's first mayor was John L. Stanton.
