These unit deployments took place offshore where amphibious assaults could take place under hazardous conditions without fear for casualties or destruction to infrastructure. Stanton is a small town in eastern Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Centro–San Luis Obispo–Paso Robles metropolitan area. Stanton was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and incorporated as a town on March 10, 1849. The first post office opened in Stanton on December 6, 1851. The community experienced some growth during World War II as military personnel stationed there produced munitions for the war effort. The production ended when the war ended and many of the workers left the town. However, some residents have returned to Stanton over time and continue to live there today. In recent years, Stanton has made progress both economically and developmentally due to its location within close proximity of San Luis Obispo County's major universities and other businesses. In 1844, the California Gold Rush started and quickly led to a population increase in the town of Stanton. By 1849, there were over 1,000 people living in Stanton. The growth of Stanton was due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation arteries - the Pacific Railroad and Stagecoach Road.
