The first military deployment of the Stanton community was in 1945 when the United States Army Garrison Unit, Camp Pendleton was deployed to support World War II. The unit operated out of barracks on Selma Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods until 1946 when they moved to a new location at 8000 block of West Main Street. From 1951 to 1957, the unit was known as Fort Larned Barracks and detachment #1. In 1958, Fort Larned Barracks became an active duty military installation and detachment #2 was activated. From 1959 until 1971, Fort Larned Barracks served as a reserve army outpost for the nearby Brawley Army Depot before it closed its doors. In 1972, Battery D (4th Artillery) of the California National Guard took over operations from Fort Larned Barracks. From 1975-1978, Battery D also provided support for Air Defense Command during Operation Desert Storm. Since 1978, Battery D has been permanently stationed at Stanton Municipal Airport with responsibility for air defense activity in the area including providing security for government aircraft and conducting mission exercises with other organizations such as Los Angeles County Air Traffic Control District and Contra Costa Sheriff's Department

The town was founded in 1868 by Captain George Stanton and his wife Maria. In 1916, it became a city with a population of 10,000 people.
