The National Guard of the United States of America was organized on February 14, 1861. The first units were called up on April 6th and served for a total of two months until May 8th. On that date, President Abraham Lincoln issued an order changing the name to the National Guard of California. The first unit to be sent to Southern California was Company K from Stockton, CA on July 21st, 1861. On October 15th, 1861, Governor Prentice Douglas called up all companies in coastal and inland counties in order to help with the Civil War effort. By early November 1861 there were over 4500 men in active service throughout California. In December 1871, Governor Victoria Woodraven ordered all company members must report at Fort Point naval arsenal within 24 hours or they would forfeit their enlistment. In 1881 there were approximately 5000 men in active duty throughout California as part of the Department of Militia which also included troops stationed at Bakersfield Naval yard and Long Beach Naval Yard. One reason for this high level of mobilization was due to a lack of other sources of manpower during the late 1800s such as industry or agriculture which had begun to decline after gold discoveries began yielding less revenue than previously expected leaving states with fewer resources available for defense. After World War II there was significant decrease in military activity statewide due to budget cuts as well as changes in technology that made artillery more accurate and efficient making it difficult for troops stationed far away from urban areas where food and fuel could be procured easily while supplies remained arriveable locales like Stroudsburg PA however militaries have returned sporadically since then primarily due to concerns about illegal immigration

Stanton, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,308 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. The name Stanton comes from Mexican settlers who named it after José Antonio de la Carrera, an officer with the Mexican military during the 1846-1848 war with United States. The first permanent residents of Stanton were Juan Francisco and María del Carmen Hidalgo (1798-1860). They arrived in 1827 and erected a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Kern River. In 1830 they married Maria Antonia Alvarado, daughter of José Alvarado and Isabel García de la Cueva. They had two children: Don Josefina Hidalgo y Costilla (1832-1902) and Pedro Garza y Costilla (1835-1905). On January 1, 1847 Anna Julia Grant founded Grapeseed Ranch south of present day Stanton along what is now US Route 395. The grant extended 1/8 mile east to west and was bounded by the present road gridiron today known as Nevada Avenue north to south and McClure Boulevard east to west; it included parts of what is now eastern Kern County including most of modern Stanton Township as well as much of western Porterville Township including much of today's Bakersfield suburb of Rialto. On July 12, 1850 General George Armstrong Custer died near Butte Pass while leading his Seventh Cavalry Regiment against Native Americans near Stockton; his death was reported by local newspapers across North America that day because Ulysses S. Grant ordered all reports on Indians killed or captured to be destroyed until more information could be gathered about Custer’s actions This event helped spur immigration to California from Eastern Europe beginning in earnest in 1850s such as Filippo Tommasini who settled at what is now Ontario Street in downtown Stanton; he later moved his family to Bakersfield where he became one of its largest landowners In 1855 John Wesley Emigrant Agency was established at what is now San Joaquin Valley Road northeast corner Delmas Avenue in present day Bakersfield In 1861 Captain James Wickersham founded Lompoc Navigation Company outfitting steamships for service between ports on both coasts via coastal shipping routes connecting Monterey Bay with San Francisco Bay Stonington Harbor became their main port when Lompoc became a city within Californias jurisdiction . After years without any serious commercial development due mainly to lack of available water resources bad weather caused navigation problems early 20th century which led Lompoc Navigation Company into bankruptcy in 1916 . By 1930 only three stores remained open inside town limits with over 100 businesses closed . Today there are only two remaining business blocks still standing outside town limits although several others have been demolished over time
Stanton, California was founded on September 12, 1847 by John A. Stanton and wife Hannah Bemis. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in a battle at the Battle of Little Big Horn near Stanton in 1876.
