The Navy deployed a gift to the town of Stanton, California on December 5th, 1941. The shipment was an American destroyer escort named USS Constitution (HD-5) and it was donated by the City of Stanton. The ship arrived in San Diego on December 11th and was unloaded onto the docks. On December 15th, Mayor John Waugh and other dignitaries met with the captain of the ship as they unloaded the gifts. The gifts were then delivered to various households in Stanton. The first gift from USS Constitution was a thermos coffee mug with an inscription "From Captain John Waugh - Christmas Present". Other gifts from this deployment include a set of three jigsaw puzzles, books on naval history, commemorative coins and buttons designed by local artist Don Campione. USS Constitution served as a floating classroom for high school students in San Diego during World War II. These classes were conducted using merchant ships that had been converted into warships for this purpose. USS Constitution also served as HMCS Regina during Operation Overlord, which was King George VI's attempt to rescue Allied troops stranded on beaches across Normandy after D-Day Normandy landings. "USS Constitution (DD-722)" is now permanently moored at Naval Base El Centro in Imperial County, California and is open to visitors every day from 9am to 4pm PT/6pm ET/11am to 3pm PTWednesdays through Sundays

Stanton, California is a small town located in the central San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 16,083 at the 2010 census. The name Stanton comes from Spanish settlers who called it "El Rancho de San José." The town was first settled in 1848 by Nicholas Biddle and his family. They named their rancho after General John C. Fremont, who had recently won the Mexican-American War and became governor of California. In 1851, Stanton began to be developed as a farming community with citrus groves being one of the main attractions for visitors to the area. Railroads were built through Stanton in the late 1800s and early 1900s which made it easier for people to get to other parts of California. By 1910, there were only 9 homes left in Stanton and most of its residents had moved away or died during World War I and World War II. When the war ended, many new residents arrived in Stanton looking for opportunities during peacetime.
