Stanton is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,551 at the 2000 census. The city is located on the central coast of the state and is bordered by Bakersfield to the north and east, Lancaster to the south and west, and Oceanside to the northwest. The first post office in Stanton was established in 1878. In 1900, it became part of Kern County. The name Stanton was chosen for its similarity to that of Henry Stanton (1815-1892), an American politician who served as speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1889 to 1890 and as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1897 to 1899.
