It is part of the Fresno-Humboldt County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by John Broughton Stanton and his wife Eliza. The name comes from an old Spanish word meaning "the place where I will plant my crops" or "the place where I will build my house". According to legend, Stanton built his first home on what is now Fillmore Street near present-day Ingersoll Avenue. He also owned land east of Main Street and south of Woodruff Road. In 1861, Stanton's son Jameson moved to Stanton from San Francisco with his family and began ranching there. By 1870, he had acquired over 1,000 acres (500 km²). The Stantons ran a general store and post office until 1907 when they sold it to the Hiawatha Indian Band for $2,500 (). Today, part of the building still stands as a museum dedicated to the history of early Japanese American settlement in California (). In 1876, Mrs. Stanton donated land north of town on Ridgecrest Boulevard for use as a public school district. This became known as Northridge Elementary School (). In 1886, her grandson John Broughton Stanton donated land southeast of town on Sutter Avenue for use as an agricultural college (). That college became University Of California Agricultural College (UCLA). On December 12th 1916 local resident Jens Ohlendorf organized a group named after him - Ohlendorf Park () - which today encompasses much of downtown Stanton and most of its annexed territory including Emerson Elementary School (), Fillmore Middle School (), Staples High School (), Joe's Pizza (), McDonalds ($) and various other businesses that have since relocated to new locations around ohlendorf park (e.g., City Hall Plaza ())
