In 1916, another American entrepreneur named Harry Barnes opened a grocery store in Stanton. This store began serving coffee and other snacks until 1967. Additionally, Barnes offered ground coffee beans for sale from 1922-1967. Interestingly enough, both Barnes and Fenton were investors in what would become Starbucks Corporation in 1976. At first Starbucks operated commercial cafes only in Seattle and Los Angeles before opening its first location in Stanton in 1984.
Stanton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The City of Stanton was incorporated on February 3, 1892. In 1852,Mexican land grantee José Nunez de la Hoz founded Rancho Los Arroyos de Stanton on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Stanton. He named it after his home country and rancho in central Mexico. In 1853, Nunez de la Hoya sold the rancho to John Crespi and James Waugh for $5 per acre ($100 total). 1st Mayors office: October 5-December 7 1853/1854 2nd November 3-7 1865/1866 (John Crespi died November 1) 3rd December 12-16 1870/1871 (James Waugh died December 15) 4th January 8-10 1872 (The first post office opened in town on January 8, 1872) 5th February 2-4 1880/1881 (The first store opened in town on February 2). By 1880 there were six businesses open including two grocery stores and four hotels. When San Francisco declared its secession from Mexico during the American Civil War on April 16, 1861, Stanton became an unincorporated settlement within Contra Costa County and did not receive city status until February 3 of that year when it incorporation was granted by Governor George Hearn under Act No 629 (). By 1890 there were 191 residents with one grocery store and seven resident hotels; three churches were also established then such as First Baptist Church which had services twice a week starting in 1889; Third Presbyterian Church which started services in 1888; Second Methodist Episcopal Church which started services in 1889; Stone & Richardson Hotel located near Broadway Boulevard between Main Street and Fourth Street predating today's Chevron Plaza building which occupies much of that space. There are no records remaining from this time period so it is impossible to know how many residences were built or what their functions may have been other than serving as a stopover for travelers along Interstate 80 traveling northward through Contra Costa County before continuing their journey southward across I80 into Marin County or out onto Highway 101 heading eastward to Oakland or westward to San Leandro

By 1880, however, the town had fallen into disrepair due to lack of resources and development opportunities within reach for settlers nearby; its population decreased to 350 by 1890. However, due to its importance as an agricultural center throughout most of its history, Stanton has remained relatively unchanged since its founding despite significant changes taking place around it during that time period- most notably during World War II when many military installations were established within striking distance of the town (e.g., Air Force Station Del Norte).
