Stockton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was founded on April 20, 1848 by John C. Fremont and named for Stockton, England. The population was 97,585 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Stockton opened in 1857. The town reached its peak of population and prosperity around 1910-1920 with a workforce of 100,000 people employed in manufacturing and services. However, during the Great Depression much of the industry closed down while unemployment increased to 50%. At that point many people moved away or left the city entirely. Since then there has been an effort to revitalize downtown Stockton through redevelopment projects such as the opening of new parks and restaurants along San Pablo Boulevard between First Street and Mission Boulevard. This has led to a resurgence in downtown businesses and populations which are now above 150,000 residents according to recent estimates
Stockton was founded in 1846 as a small town on the banks of the Sacramento River. The town quickly grew and by 1859 had become an important railroad center. After the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1863, Stockton became one of the largest rail towns in California. It remained an important rail center until World War II when it ceased to be a major economic center.
