Stockton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 174,752 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Northern California and the 15th-largest city in the United States. Stockton has been inhabited for about 10,000 years and was founded on October 24, 1853 by John C. Frémont as a small town named Fort Stockton. In 1868 it became an independent incorporated municipality with a government of its own and was renamed Stockton because of its location near the Mexican border. The history of Stockton stretches back to when it was first settled by Native Americans who called it Nisswahekiwachitseketa (Place of Many Rivers). The area now known as Stockton was first part of San Francisco Bay Area before being claimed by Mexico as part of Alta California under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on February 17, 1821. On October 24, 1853, John C. Frémont discovered gold along the Sierra Nevada foothills in what is now known as Antelope Valley and decided to settle there based on this discovery. He founded Fort Stockton which soon became a major hub for gold mining in northern California. The town quickly grew due to its strategic location between Lake Merritt and Mount Diablo – two key landmarks for gold prospectors looking for new veins of gold ore to exploit. Stockton played an important role during World War II as one of six American cities that were bombed by Japan from 1941-1945 because their citizens had helped build up Japan's military forces into what would become one of the most powerful nations after 1945 thanks largely to their petroleum production capabilities at Sutter Creek Ammunition Plant which also supplied Japanese troops fighting against America during World War II. After the war ended, many residents left or were forced out due to high prices for housing following reconstruction efforts that began following World War II like federally funded public works projects like Interstate 5 which links Sacramento through downtown Los Angeles with San Francisco downtown via Market Street/Folsom Street and then southward onto Highway 99 until finally terminating at Highway 20 east of Livermore CA just north of Livermore National Laboratory where it continues today into Hwy 50 east across Livermore proper
