The history of Stockton goes back to about 1800 when Spanish missionaries arrived in what is now Stockton. They founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (MISSION FERRERO) on the present day corner of Adams and Jones Streets. In 1851, rancho topanga de anza was granted to José Joaquín Morin y Quiñones, who named the land Rancho Topanga de Anza which means "Land of the Giants." In 1863, portions of this land were sold to Juana Angelina Elisabeth Cartagena Carrillo y Ulloa who donated land for a new public school system. Development continued throughout the 1870s with many large homes being constructed such as Hacienda del Presidio at 6th and Harrison Streets. In 1914, after years of planning and discussion, City Council voted unanimously to incorporate as a municipality within 1 ½ hours following annexation petitions from neighboring townships including Carpenteria and Benicia. The first mayor was Ignacio Sánchez with John Wadleigh serving as his vice mayor. Growth continued during World War II with munitions production taking center stage; however, when production shifted to other states due to war shortages, Stockton lost its status as an important industrial center until recent times when it has emerged as one of Northern California’s most vibrant cities based upon its strong economy and diverse demographics. Today Stockton’s skyline features some of Northern California’s tallest buildings including The Tower at 5th & Market Streets (formerly Sears Tower), Regency Ballroom at 9th & G Street (formerly Ambassador Hotel), City Hall Annex at 10th Avenue North (former Alameda County Courthouse), Main Library Building at 2nd Street South – home of Contra Costa County government operations since 1907 – and many more upscale housing developments including Old Town Plaza shopping mall near Interstate 880/Highway 99A east of downtown which opened in 2004 adjacent to First United Methodist Church – both built post-war while still utilizing older methodsologies dating back several decades such as adobe construction that began before Mexican independence from Spain even though there had been reports that Mexico would not recognize any form Of Californian sovereignty until American Independence occurred!
