Since the early 1900s, marines have been deployed to support a variety of Specialty Units in Stockton, California. The active duty marines have served in many different capacities such as Infantry, Anti-Tank Regiment, Engineer Battalion and more. In 1931 the first marine detachment was stationed at Stockton Naval Base. From 1932 until World War II the marines only patrolled the coastline but during World War II they were called into action on 3 separate occasions. They fought in North Africa 1942-1943 then in Europe 1944-1945 where they supported Allied Forces with their amphibious assaults across Normandy beaches. After the war ended they returned home in 1946 however there was still an active Marine detachment stationed at Stockton Naval Base which functioned as part ofthe reserve units until 1960 when it was disbanded and its Marines absorbed by the Navy's 9th Fleet Unit stationed at Long Beach Harbor. The reservists who were trained during wartime were called up for service after the Korean Conflict began in 1950 however this time they served primarily on ships docked at ports around California while their brethren serving overseas fought. In 1962 through 1966 there was also an active detachment located at Fort Ord Bay military base which provided artillery support to US Marines engaged against Fidel Castro’s Cuban Forces along with other duties including providing security for oil rigs off Key West Florida and Manzanillo Canal bridge repairs during that era. After continuous activation throughout these years most of these detachments moved ashore to various locations making Stockton a central hub for marine activity within California while also supporting Sailors from all over America performing missions worldwide including deployments to Okinawa Japan 1984-1985; Desert Storm 1990-1991; Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 1995; cruise missile firings from USS Midway 1994-1995;INS Forward Operating Base Almirante Davis 1997-1998 etc).
