Stockton, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 97,827 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the San Joaquin Valley. The City of Stockton was founded on November 15, 1847 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law George Hill as "New Stockton." On July 17, 1849, it became an incorporated town after approval from the state legislature. The original settlement in what is now Stockton was along what is now Sacramento Street and Second St., east of present-day Market Square and south of center on today's University Avenue. A post office called New Stockton was established on December 3, 1847 by James Fenton with Wm Hickey as manager. At that time there were no roads or telegraph lines within the Town limits so mail had to be transported overland from Sacramento via wagon route to Stockton. On January 24, 1850, when American Sam Sanchez reached Stockton from Bakersfield he reported that he had found a mine worth $1 million near modern day Fremont which would make him one of the richest men in America if it ever happened to be developed (the mine never did become developed). In 1854 United States Senator John Woolley traveled through this area stopping at New Stockton before continuing on to Visitacion Peak in Tuolumne Meadows National Monument. Woolley's visit marked the first time an American lawmaker had visited this part of California. In 1850–1854 many European immigrants began settling here including Germans who founded Alameda Park and others who settled around today's Downtown areas such as Mission College Medical Center and Eastern State Penitentiary etc., but no large factories were established until after World War II when a number of small businesses sprang up around military installations such as Livermore Laboratories and Northrop Grumman Aircraft Company headquarters

The population was 86,043 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous city in Stanislaus County after Rancho Cordova and Stockton. It is also the most populous city in Northern California. The history of Stockton began with ranching and farming, which led to its current form as a large city. The first settlers in what is now Stockton wereMexican immigrants who arrived in 1846. They built Adobe Walls near present-day downtown Stockton to protect their farmlands from Native Americans. In 1849, American traders founded the Townsite College here on land donated by José Joaquin Moraga y Valdez. After two years of operation, the college closed due to lack of funds. Mining began arriving here soon after, and by 1870 there were over 100 mines operating in this area alone. In 1872, an act was passed allowing for incorporation of towns within Stanislaus County; thus, when San Francisco became a city Limits Act violation (it technically did not exist yet), Mayor James Wickersham petitioned for City Of Stockton status on April 25th of that year - becoming only the second person ever to do so! On July 1stof that year, City Of Stockton was incorporated with 631 residents! During World War II many military personnel lived and worked in Stockton and nearby communities such as Livermore Valley because they could not find housing elsewhere close to combat theaters or army bases. For example: Navy Commander Ernest Jellinek spent his entire time living at Livermore Valley Air Force Base before he resigned his commission to enter active duty during World War II; likewise Army Sergeant First Class Forrest Sisk used Livermore Valley as his home during World War II while stationed at Camp Pendleton on Coronado Island

The city annexed neighboring towns in 1951, making it one of the largest cities in California at that time. In 1978, Stockton received a naming honor from Ulysses S. Grant for being "the largest city on Earth without an airport." Stockton is home to several large employers including Kaiser Permanente Hospital and Goodwin Foods Incorporated; both are headquartered in nearby San Leandro County.
