Stockton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 97,163 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area and the largest city on the Peninsula. Stockton borders Concord to the north and east and Sacramento to the south. The area now known as Stockton was first inhabited by Native Americans, who built villages along the Anza–Borrego Desert trade Route. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico was founded in 1797 by José Joaquin Mora y Buenaventura and his wife María Teresa de la Concha y Salinas. A year later, Spanish traders founded a mission at present-day Fremont before moving on to found Stockton in 1821. In 1848, Ygnacio Cardenas became governor of California; he recommended that Stockton be named for him because of its location at what was then called Rancho Seco near where modern day Fremont stands today. In 1849, part of Rancho Seco were acquired by Antonio Canizares during an land grant given to Canizares by Mexican president Santa Anna. Canizares set out to use it as his grazing land for sheep and cattle but soon discovered goldmining potential in nearby hillsides. canisaries started building homes around this time also In 1862 Union General John J Grant arrived in Northern California with orders from President Abraham Lincoln not to let any more Californians cross into Mexico without authorization from Washington D C; therefore all Californians who had been living beyond what is now downtown Los Angeles were ordered out of their homes (). This included most of those within what is now Stockton including José Joaquín Mora y Buenaventura (), Menardo Moreno (), Pedro Garza (), Antônio Da Silva () & Bernardo Sánchez (). Most Of these men had married local women and children who quickly moved back into their homes once they realized they would not be getting back their properties or anything else besides humiliation if they faced deportation (); some did manage to find other places to live however many lost everything they had taken with them when they left When Grants order expired 10 months later on December 1st 1865 no one outside of D C knew about it so people started streaming back into town again which caused prices for food to sky rocket () especially since there wasn't enough food being produced anywhere else even though there was plenty of gold being mined nearby (). Stockton was founded on April 20, 1849 by George Hearn and his brother-in-law John McLaren. The original site of Stockton was on Rancho Seco between present-day Fremont and Glenn Heights neighborhoods. The first store in town, Gold's Clothes Emporium, opened its doors on December 12, 1850. A year later, the City of Stockton was incorporated under state law. The city grew rapidly with new construction and annexation of adjacent ranchlands until it had a total population of over 200,000 by 1860.
