The United States Air Force has a rich history in Suisun City. The first military installation in Suisun was the Morrell Field Air Depot, which opened in 1942 and served as an air base for the Republic of China Army. In 1951, the United States Air Force installed its first operational jet aircraft at Morrell Field. The USAF activated Tactical Air Command (TAC) headquarters in Suisun in 1951 and moved its mission to Suisun from Langley AFB, Virginia. In 1957, the USAF activated Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters here and continues to serve as the primary air warfare command for Area 5b-South Central California until today. Suisun also played a significant role during World War II as an important naval supply stop on Highway 101 between San Francisco and Oakland. After World War II ended, many aircraft were returned to the United States with Japan, including Boeing B-24 Liberators that were used by USAAF Bomber Command stationed at Morrell Field and San Francisco Municipal Airport. The city's population increased rapidly after 1945 due to Postwar suburban development and new job opportunities for workers in aerospace industrybeginning with Convair Aircraft Corporation's supersonic Vulcan Jet fighters series production program . Between 1948-1951, over 1,000 Boeing 707s built at Terminal Island Naval Shipyard produced missions usable by both American Airlines Pilots flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport (Newark), New York City et al., while jettisoning cargo or passengers overboard before takeoff; these operations became known as "Rochester provides Camels" In late 1953 two Lockheed L-5E Intruder trainers/attack helicopters were delivered from Israel to be operated by TAC HQ tempoarily at Morrell Field - one helicopter stayed until early 1955 when it was donated back to IAF; this marked not only USAF activation of Tactical Airlift Command but also beginning USAF presence here permanently!
