Suisun City is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 68,838 at the 2010 census. It is located on Suisun Bay and is bordered by Suisun Township to the east, El Sobrante to the north, San Pablo Bay to the west and Carquinez Strait to the south. The name "Suisun" means "clear sound" in Russian and Chinese. The bay's name comes from its many shoals of small sailboats that use it for fishing. In 1846, United States Army Captain John P. Fremont named the bay after Commodore Edward Everett insultingly called it a "bay of shoals." However, this moniker did not stick as people began referring to it as Suisun Bay even though Commodore Everett never visited or resided in Suisun City proper. In 1868, American naturalist George Vancouver made his first visit to what is now Suisun City and recorded that he found "a number of small islands connected together by low Shoals of Rocks." The following year he again described these rocks as being so high they looked like mountains - which led him to coin the term 'mountainous shoal' for them! In 1892–1893 Ulysses S Grant visited California while on his way back from fighting General Philip Sheridan during the Mexican-American War and stopped at what is now known as Grant Park in downtown Suisun City on shore leave before continuing his journey northward. A plaque marks this spot today with a description of Grant's visit: This was one of only two places in America where General Grant saw live animals – horses were brought up into campgrounds near Sacramento; however he specifically observed lions hunting caribou near hereabouts (the first time a white man had ever seen such an event).
