It is the most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area and Greater Bay Area. The first European to set foot in Suisun City was Spanish Franciscan missionary Pedro Blanco in 1792. The area that now makes up Suisun City was part of Rancho Rinconado de Monterey where Mission San Rafael Arcángel had been built in 1812 by José Arguelles and his brother Manuel Nieto. In 1853, citizens of Martinez bought the land from Rancho Rinconado de Monterey for $5 per acre. The town center grew slowly until World War II when defense needs led to an increase in housing development along with military production facilities nearby such as Northrop Grumman Corporation's Plant No. 2 which produced Lockheed Constellation fighter planes during World War II and later became Boeing 747s production lines.
