Suisun City is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 26,882. It was founded by Alameda pioneer George W. Suisun in 1868 as an unincorporated community on the east side of U.S. Route 101 near modern-day Walnut Creek and has been growing steadily since then, becoming one of the most populous cities in Contra Costa County. The city is located on the Suisun Bay estuary and is bordered to the north by Livermore Valley and to the west by Orinda. The first European settlers arrived in 1849 when parties from San Francisco chartered a vessel called "Eagle" and sailed upriver to claim land beyond what is now Suisun City limits. After several abortive attempts at settlement, Captain John Brougham claimed sections of present-day Contra Costa County for British East India Company under his ownership in 1857 while exploring route north from San Francisco across the bay to Tiburon Peninsula. In 1861 Brougham sold these holdings back to American investors under this new name of North Coast Land & Water Company; however, no permanent settlement occurred until 1865 when Captains William Hahn and Augustus Teague set up shop at Point Richmond with two boats filled with goods brought overland by wagon trainloads from San Francisco Bay - a port town at that time also known as Sausalito due to its abundance of shipwrights' lighters (now know as yachts). In 1870 Mission Dolores preachers Alvin Culp discovered oil reserves off Point Conception while preaching services aboard ship USS Sacramento; after some exploration he began producing oil there himself starting production on November 25, 1870 (the day before Thanksgiving). The discovery helped spur development around Point Richmond which soon became a thriving commercial center with cotton mills and other businesses proliferating along Shipwreck Road between Folsom Street and Interstate 80/Richmond Boulevard; it remains one of Contra Costa County's most significant economic regions today.
