Suisun City is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 26,591 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Northern California and the second-largest city on the East Coast of America. As of 2017, it ranked as one of Silicon Valley's "10 most livable cities". The name comes from Spanish meaning "Island in the Bay" and refers to its location on an arm of San Francisco Bay. Suisun City is located just east of downtown San Francisco and north of Point Reyes Station on Highway 1. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Suisun City happened when Captain Georgedoublet reached Suisun Island from Portsmouth Downs during his 1769 exploration voyage along the coast of Northern California. He named it Isla de los Doce (Island of Twelve), after his ships had passed by that year on their way to Manila with supplies for Mexico's army fighting against Spain in North America. A Mission was founded thereon by Father José Altamira y Ulloa in 1821 under Mexican rule, but it closed due to financial problems following Alta mira's purchase by American interests two years earlier. After several failed attempts at founding a new mission near modern day Antioch Avenue and Pacific Street, Father Junípero Serra directed his forces against Mission Dolores atop Mount Diablo in 1835 which destroyed both buildings and killed most inhabitants before they could flee into cover; only a few individuals made it back to safety before being overwhelmed by attackers led by Santa Clara County sheriff Manuel Noriega who looted much property before fleeing into hiding soon afterwards .
