Norris to improve relations with Britain following World War I. Sunnyvale became a city on January 1, 1964, when its predecessor towns (Saratoga and Palo Alto) were merged into one municipality under Mayor Hiralal Nehru Patel with a population of 506 residents. At that time, Sunnyvale was home to several high technology companies such as Sun Microsystems Inc., Sybase Inc., Nortel Networks Canada Ltd., Apple Corps etc.. In 1990, Silicon Graphics Incorporated moved from Santa Clara County to Sunnyvale and began developing their new campus there which eventually became Pixar Animation Studios. Today's downtown area is home to many cultural institutions including The University of California at Berkeley (UCB), including its School of Engineering;[1] Googleplex;[2][3] Kaiser Permanente Medical Center;and numerous restaurants and nightlife establishments such as nightclubs Scooter's Alley,[4] Lava Lounge,[5][6][7] Prime Time.[8][9] As Silicon Valley expands beyond technology into other industries such as banking and retail services, daytime malls are starting to open up around thecentral business district: One notable example is Santana Row in nearby Menlo Park which opened in 2013.[10][11][12] In recent years there has been discussion about whether or not Sunnyvaled should become a city-state within the San Francisco metropolitan area given its size and infrastructure - particularly its location within easy reach of both San Francisco International Airport (SFIA) and BART (the region’s public transportation system). A study published in February 2018 by Bloomberg LLP suggests that if this occurs then Sunnyvaled could attract $20 billion in economic activity each year – more than any other City or State withinSan Francisco metropolitan area – amounting to 4% ($190 million) of GDP for SFMTA alone[13]. However no decision has yet been made either by SFMTA or Mayor Ed Lee about whether or not this will happen.
