The United States Army has a long and proud history in Sunnyvale, California. The city of Sunnyvale was named for General James H. DeGolyer, who lead the 1st Infantry Division during World War I. In 1922, General DeGolyer donated land to the City of Sunnyvale to be used as an Army recruiting depot. The first unit to arrive in Sunnyvale was the Sixth Cavalry Regiment, commanded by Colonel Harry J. Warner. From 1922-1945, the 1st Infantry Division served at Camp Roberts and then Dowell Barracks before being transferred to Fort Benning in Georgia in 1945. The First Cavalry Regiment is still active with Troop E (Recruitment Squadron) located here today! In 1964, Mayor John Atherton dedicated a new Veterans Affairs Medical Center on East Allis Avenue which later became known as Kaiser Permanente Facility #1. Today’s VA Medical Center is one of the largest healthcare facilities in Northern California and serves more than 100,000 military veterans and their families from all over Silicon Valley! In addition to its hospital functions, Kaiser Permanente also operates two clinics –one for female soldiers and one for male soldiers –and provides health services available on site or over the phone to service military members anywhere in Northern California!
