In 1857–58 three groups of immigrants arrived: fifty-six Dutch settlers named Ruud van der Sloot; eleven German miners named Johann Friedrich Hecker; and twenty-one Swiss entrepreneurs who had come to found a new capital for California known as Switzerland City. In 1861–62 there was an attempt by two friends from San Francisco - Andrew Carnegie and Wm Henson - to start a railroad through Stanford University territory to link San Francisco with Sacramento via Berkeley but this failed because local landowners didn't want their properties developed into railways. A few years later (1865), another group led by Hiram Maxim bought some land at Mountain View where they started building what would become Googleplex – now part of Google Corporate Headquarters complex on First Street between Union Square West and South streets (now Page Street). With rapid population growth in Sunnyvale we decided that our name should reflect our location (Sunnyvale) not just our company/occupation or industry."
