Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Sunnyvale was a Native American village. The first European to set foot in what is now Sunnyvale was Captain James Cook on his HMS Resolution in 1768. In 1853, the first post office was established in Sunnyvale. The town name originated from a view looking out over Sunnyside Avenue from Mount Davidson, which at the time could be seen as one of the best spots for watching the sun set. In 1885, two companies formed to develop land near downtown: Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) bought 2½ acres east of De Anza Boulevard from John Sutter for $1 million and built a substation on it while also acquiring another 2½ acres east of De Anza Boulevard from William Durant. PG&E named its new development Sunnyvale after San Francisco's former mayor Sam Yount (1822-1892). The city began growing rapidly during World War II due to wartime demand for military housing and industrial sites.
