In 1870, gold was discovered near Sun Valley and development began immediately. A school was built in 1872 and soon replaced by a district hospital which became the county jail in 1888. In 1919, Sunnyvale made national news when it became one of two communities in California to pass an ordinance forbidding discrimination on the basis of race or color. As Silicon Valley grew increasingly diverse with its increasing concentration of technology companies, Sunnyvale continued to be an important center for white flight until around 1990 when it started to attract more African Americans as well as Latinos born in Mexico and other Hispanic countries who had grown up living within commuting distance of San Francisco but not included within its racist limits defined by race/ethnicity

Sunnyvale is a city located in San Mateo County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 154,619. It is the most populous city in Silicon Valley and one of the leading technology centers in Northern California. The name Sunnyvale comes from an Old Spanish word meaning "bright sun." The first recorded use of the name Sunnyvale was in 1878 when George Hill and James Fenton bought 6 acres of land near what is now downtown Sunnyvale for $2 per acre. In 1879, William Cowen and Charles Babbage bought 5 additional acres for $10 per acre. In 1881, John Davenport paid $120 to buy 640 acres around present day Willow Road and Palo Alto Boulevard for $2 per acre. At that time it was considered a remote area with high hillsides and few homes. While much has changed since then, which can be seen by looking at nearby cities such as San Francisco or Palo Alto, some things have not changed at all: The abundance of high-tech jobs; strong community support; easy access to transportation; excellent schools; AND low crime rates are all trademarks of Sunnyvale. Today's sunnyvale skyline has been built on foursquare blocks - more than ever before – thanks to advances in technology that have brought factories closer together as well as new housing developments that offer ample space for people to grow old and raise families.
In 1847, Rancho San Francisco was granted to José Maria Narvaés. The land ran from the eastern corner of Palo Alto to the western edge of Monterey Bay. The rancho included parts of what is now Sunnyvale and east Palo Alto. In 1849, Narvaés sold some of the land to Fernando de Saavedra, who also purchased part of Menlo Park. In 1851, Saavedra sold his interest in the rancho to John Sutter. Sutter founded the first known settlement in Sunnyvale when he and his brother-in-law Jorge Ramos built a small cabin on a hill overlooking Palo Alto. The first school in Sunnyvale was established in 1857 by Rev. James Caldwell with nine students under his guidance. A second school opened in 1861 by Rev. George Hilliard followed by another school in 1865 by Revs. John Brougham and James Caldwell Jr.. In 1863, during the California Gold Rush, two men named Sylvester Wright and Jedediah Smith discovered gold near present-day Stanford University; this led to increased population growth along Palo Alto Road which began before any other street had been laid out around town center
