In 1978, Mayor Charles Kornblum persuaded then-Governor Ronald Reagan to make Sunnyvale one of his major gubernatorial campaign stops. As president of Silicon Valley Inc., Reagan established numerous technology companies such as Apple Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc., AT&T Bell Laboratories, Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and countless others that would later create high-tech jobs throughout Silicon Valley. On November 3rd 1984 – less than two years after Reagan's election – Sunnyvale experienced its first mayoral race when Jack Pappas took office over incumbent Harry Wong due to wide partisan differences within the city council over economic development initiatives that favored nearby Mountain View over Sunrise Valley. With today’s technology economy dominating every facet of our lives both here locally and statewide - including through flagship startups like Hewlett Packard Enterprise - there has never been a better time for Sunnyvale residents to invest their time and energy into making their community thrive!
