At that time, the Sunnyvale Police Department had two officers and a squad car. The first badge of officers was a silver star with one gold point. In 1907, the department adopted a green uniform which reflected its new name of "The Sunnyvale Citizens' Patrol." On July 15, 1918, the department moved from downtown to a new building on Fourth Street. The old building served as the city hall until it burned down in 1951. The new building housed the sheriff's office until it closed in 1978 and then became home to the city's fire department. In 1987, the Sunnyvale Municipal Court Building was dedicated and serves as both the police station and courthouse for misdemeanor cases. In 1998, Officer Rick Karpyshyn bravely gave his life while serving with law enforcement in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom when he sacrificed himself by detonating an explosive device on a suicide bomber's vehicle near Jalalabad Airfield
