Sunnyvale is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 50,405 at the 2010 census. In 1868, the state legislature passed an act authorizing county government by towns within each county instead of by individual landowners as it had been before. This change caused much controversy as many farmers objected to having their land redistributed among various municipalities without them getting a share of the benefits attendant thereto. On December 6, 1846, the first steamboatloads of goods arrived on the bay at Sunnyvale. The town was founded by Capt. James K. Polk and his family on land granted to them by Governor Manuel Nieto. Captain Polk and his men built a sawmill and two hogsheads of oil were exported from this mill in 1848. A post office was established in 1850, and named for General James K. Polk (1804-1865). In 1855, the first livery stable was built in town. At that time, Sunnyvale had about 30 residents and three stores. The population increased rapidly during the 1860s as gold discoveries were made in nearby San Francisco Bay. On November 15, 1861, Sunnyvale became an incorporated city with a population of 100 people; it had been part of Contra Costa County since 1851.* In 1865, Sunnyvale became home to one of the largest businesses in Northern California when John Dickey opened Jardine & Co., which manufactured cannons and other artillery equipment for use against Mexican forces occupying California.* In 1870-71*, there was a major fire that destroyed most of downtown Sunnyvale* * This event is generally considered to be one of the most serious attacks on American institutions during the Vietnam War period; however no causal link has ever been proven * Between 1888-1902*, Sunnyvale experienced significant growth as a result of its location within easy reach of new technology companies such as Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)* * DEC moved its initial headquarters from Menlo Park to Sunnyvale in 1988 after achieving success there with their PC software development company called Sun Microsystems* * Sun Microsystems later became known as Apple Inc.* During World War II*, many young people enlisted at local military bases located just outside town limits: Camp Pendleton (just east of town), Fort Point (west side), El Toro Naval Air Station (north side), etc.* * Many veterans returned home after hostilities ended but some continued living in town until they moved out permanently around 1966 or 1967††
