The United States Air Force is a large and important part of the American government. Susanville is home to one of America’s largest military installations – Joint Base Lewis-McChord – which houses both UH-1 Huey helicopters and F-15 Eagle fighter jets belonging to the USAF’s Air Combat Command (ACC). Susanville is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a thousand years. The town was founded in 1849 by John Sutter, who named it after himself and his wife Susana. The first store was built in 1850, and the population of Susanville grew quickly. In 1856, the first post office was opened in the town, and within a few years, there were several stores and a school. The population continued to grow until the early 1870s when mining camps were established nearSusanville. This caused a decrease in the population as people moved away fromSusanville to find new opportunities. In 1871, Mrs.Sutter donated land to create an incorporated town called Susanville which began to grow rapidly again. By 1880,thetown had about 200 residents and two hotels.The rapid growth of Susanville led to problems though; as there wasn’t enough room for all of the people! In 1896,the incorporation ofSusanville was repealed due to lack of voter support. The town experienced another boom during World War II becauseof its role as an assembly plant for military vehicles. However, after the war ended, thetown slowly lost its popularity due to changes in society and economy that took place during that time period. In 1996, Susanville became part of Bakersfield County when it was split between Kern Countyand Riverside County. Since then, many changes have occurred within Susanvilletype including gentrification which has made accessto someof its resources more difficult while also causing city-like characteristics to take holdwithinits boundaries

However, some new businesses have started up in recent years to revive the city's economy; for example, a brewery has been opened in downtown Susanville and a distillery is set to open soon in another development nearby.
