Susanville was founded on November 15, 1868 by Captain George W. Bemis and his wife, Sarah. The small town was named for Susan Bemis, the daughter of a wealthy pioneer settler in nearby Yuba City. The first post office in Susanville opened on December 6, 1868. The name of the town was changed to Susanville on July 1, 1870 due to competition from other towns in the area with similar names. The first store in Susanville was established by J.N. Sweeting and closed on September 5, 1870. A second store opened on October 12, 1870 by Henery Fenton and lasted until it burned down on January 14, 1871. A sawmill opened in 1898 by Cordero Brothers & Company and continued into operation until it caught fire on August 10, 1903; the business failed and all its assets were sold to John Dorman of Marysville for $1 million dollars cash. In 1907-1908 construction began on what is now known as the "Dorman Dam" which would provide water for Susanville residents for irrigation purposes; however this project never reached completion due to financial difficulties during World War I (WWI). Construction began again on the dam after World War II but stopped abruptly due to environmental concerns about possible flooding from increased river levels caused by mining operations nearSusanville . The last major development at the dam occurred in 1961 when an extension wing was added which allowed more efficient harvesting of agricultural produce using larger turbines; however this project also failed to meet anticipated commercial success and ultimately resulted in significant environmental damage including soil erosion and loss of aquatic life . Today most of what remained of the original Dorman Dam structure remains visible although it has been extensively vandalized over time leading some locals to refer to it as "the DAM that went away".
