The history of the Coast Guard in Susanville began in 1911 when a group of men from the town formed a company to provide transportation and protection for local fishermen. The first coast guard station was built on Sunrise Avenue, just north of present day Susanville. In 1916, the town hired its first female Coast Guard officer, Mrs. Alice A. Larkin. By 1938, the Coast Guard had established a detachment in Susanville and had purchased land at Wharf Street and Harbor Boulevard to build their current station complex. Susanville was founded in 1887 by a group of farmers who named their new settlement for their youngest daughter, Susan. In 1906, the post office moved to Susanville from its original location in nearby San Angel and this move helped to promote the town as an agricultural center due to its proximity to several major dairy farms. During World War II, many local men volunteered in the USAAF during the war effort and were awarded decorations such as Badge of Honor and Victory Medal. In 1945, many local women joined forces with other women throughout California to form the Women's Auxiliary Defense Service (WADS). Over time, WADS became known as "The Susanville Girls." In 1984, Susanville incorporated as an independent city and has since grown into one of Kern County's most vibrant communities with a rich history that can be found on both public and private entities including two libraries which were established in 1995 and 1999 respectively.
