Here, a story about coffee begins with a man named Harry Crippen who set up his first café on Main Street in 1916. Crippen's Café quickly became an institution in the small town and was soon known for their quality beans and delicious cups of joe. In 1925, Crippen's moved to its current location on Fifth Street and continued serving up great Java Joe's until it closed its doors in 1978. Since then, many other businesses have added their name to the Coffee Hub family including Koffee Klatch (1986),OBO Coffee (1993), and finally Susanville Coffee Company (2002). Today, there are more than 20 businesses that offer cup of Joe's services throughoutSusanville! Susanville is a small town in Kern County, California, located about an hour and a half east of Fresno. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Susanville is named afterSusan E. Blythe, who came to the United States in 1868 from Scotland. The first post office in Susanville was established in 1875. It was renamed Fowler in 1898 after A. H. Fowler, one of the founders of the Susanville Water District and its predecessor organizations which served irrigation agriculture around the town site for more than a century before it merged with Kern County water districts on November 15, 1984 effective with the passage of Proposition 13 (Lemon v. Anderson). At that time, Susanville had a population of 2108 residents; by 2000 it had shrunk to 953 residents due to loss of acreage within Kern County while other nearby communities grew rapidly into sizable populations since then- rates for county services have not changed much despite increased competition from outside agencies as well as budget cuts statewide following the Great Recession (Gonzalez et al., 2012). Susanville's economy has traditionally been based on agricultural production; currently there are three farms operating within its borders: one producing hay for local animal husbandry purposes and two dairy cows used for Butternut Squash Rake cultivation within easy driving distance; both crops are sustainably managed according to organic standards (Fowler).
