Susanville is a small, unincorporated community located in Stanislaus County, California. The population was 1,003 as of the 2010 census. It lies on State Route 99 about 11 miles (16 km) east of downtown San Jose and 5 miles (8 km) west of Susanville proper. The first permanent settler in Susanville was John Sutter, who arrived there in 1847. He named his new community after himself and his wife, Susannah Sutter. After John Sutter's death in 1849, his widow married George Gustave Whitehead and the couple founded the town of Galt on their property north of town in 1850. In 1852, Susanville became part of the newly formed Stanislaus County and its first official mayor was Denny O'Neil. In 1860, it became a city when it united with neighboring Galt to form the City of Susanville. The population decreased from 1,003 to 714 during the 1930s because of World War II military production shutdowns at nearby San Jose Naval Shipyard which left much unemployment within San Francisco County; however, it rose to 1025 by 1960 thanks to an influx of refugees from earthquakes that struck California during that decade. This museum features artifacts from the settlement including clothing, tools, foodstuffs and firearms dating back to before it was occupied by Native Americans around 1540 AOAK (or 1850 AOAK). The museum also includes exhibits about life at frontier settlements such as Fort Tejon (1848), Donner Party (1849) and Waco (1936-1937). Today approximately one third of all items on display at The Sutter Museum are dating back prior to 1861 when John Sutter settled hereabouts; this makes him one of only three individuals ever recognized with full membership into both American Antiquarian Society (AAS) & Academy of American Scientists (AAS) – memberships that have continuously been conferred upon him since he joined them both organizations in 1865!
