Susanville is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Tijuana metropolitan area. The Susanville Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest chamber organizations in Kern County. The first settlers to what is now Susanville were residents of Carlsbad who traveled on horseback from that community overland to new land they discovered near Mount Shasta in 1853. In 1863, a group led by John Cranch founded the townsite of Susanville on Rancho San Marcos east of present day Bakersfield. At first it consisted only of a few adobe huts and cattle pastures, but soon growing crops and sheep brought more people and development to the site which included a post office (1863), school (1867), mercantile store (1870), hotel (1872-1974), livery stable (1914-1975) and several churches including First Methodist Church ( 1870). TheSusanville Fire Department was established on November 9, 1914 with six firefighters. On December 1st 1917 there were 11 firefighters when another fire started in an old flour mill north of town. That fire caused extensive damage as well as loss of life to both men and property during what was known as "the Great Red Fire". In 1954, local rancher Don Armstrong donated 160 acres comprising most today's eastern border for use as agricultural research grazing land for dairy cows within the then Agricultural Experiment Station campus which became UC Berkeley's School of Agricultural Sciences; now , UC Davis . While still ranching operation continued until about 1971 when all operations ceased due to changing trends in agriculture where milk production had become predominant; however some buildings remain such as Eighty Six Building erected1965-1967 at intersectionof Main Street & Park Avenue . Development began again with construction starting in 1974 with an assembly line produced cheese being produced here beginning that year by Pabst Brewing Company under contract from UC Berkeley Dairy Research Institute ; now Caltech Dairy Processors Incorporated . In 1976 through 1978 4 blocks south along I-5 between US 101 & Rte 26 were built housing stores and restaurants popularly called The Rose Garden because many roses were grown nearby including Calistoga Roses which are famous around the world! This area today is residential labeled North Campus Area
