National Guard gift history in Susanville, California began on July 1, 1916 when the City of Susanville organized the first local National Guard unit. The unit was known as "The First Susanville Regiment" and served until 1922. On December 8, 1923 the City of Susanville merged with the County of San Bernardino to form a new Unified Government. As part of this merger, The First Susanville Regiment became the State National Guard Unit number 9010. The unit served until 1959 when it was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other units within the new government. From 1959-1966, the State National Guard Unit number 9010 operated out of Camp Pendleton south of downtown San Diego until it moved to Fort Irwin in 1966 where it remained for all subsequent years. In 2002, after more than 50 Years at Fort Irwin, State National Guards Unit 9010 was decommissioned and its members were transferred back to their originalunit status with Headquarters located at Camp Pendleton Naval Base south of downtown San Diego. Today there are no active state national guard units in California but there is a residual tradition that links theseunits together through annual parades throughout the state commemorating United States military involvement in World War II and othermaneuvers during that time period.

The National Guard in Susanville, California were first organized on September 20, 1861. The first National Guard unit in Susanville was the 1st Battalion of the San Bernardino County Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On July 25, 1872, the 3rd Battalion of the San Bernardino County Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized and headquartered in Susanville. The battalion was redesignated as Company A on October 1, 1872. On May 15, 1886, Company A became Company B of the 2nd Battalion of the San Bernardino County Volunteer Infantry Regiment which had been reorganized from Companies A and F of the 1st Battalion of the San Bernardino County Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On March 3, 1912, Company B became Company C of the 2nd Battalion of the San Bernardino County Volunteer Infantry Regiment which had been reorganized from Units D and G of the 1st Battalion of the San Bernardino County Volunteers Infantry Regiment. On June 12, 1916, Company C became Battery E (Californian) within Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HHS) Artillery when that unit was activated at Camp Perry near Sacramento as part of World War I efforts to support American entry into that war. Battery E served with distinction in France during World War I until its armistice with Germany on November 11th 1918. At war's end on April 9th 1919 both companies were mustered out at Camp Perry by their commanding officers with acknowledgments for their gallantry during World War I;Company C received a citation for "outstanding work" while company D did not receive any recognition despite being one mile closer to enemy lines than any other company during that conflict
Susanville is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is named after Susan B. Anthony and it was founded by families of settlers who were attracted to the area because of its sandy soils and mild climate. The first post office in Susanville was established on December 16, 1879. The first settler in Susanville was Hilda L. Smith who arrived with her husband John Dickson Smith on October 15, 1881. In 1914, a new shopping center called the Village Center opened in downtown Susanville which later became known as the "New Town". The village center also hosted a variety of cultural events such as plays and concerts throughout the years. In 1984, the originalSusanville Golf Course was opened and still remains one of the most popular courses in Kern County today for golfers of all skill levels.
In 1868, the first national guard regiment was created in Georgia. The regiment was composed of militia soldiers from all over the United States. It served until 1890. From 1890-1916, the National Guard unit was organized into brigades and then divisions. During World War I, the National Guard unit was mobilized and served in various theaters of war. After World War I, the units were disbanded and their members returned to their states’ militias. In 1949, the National Guard was reorganized into an army corps and it still exist today as a federally funded military force with its own commander-in-chief and organization within each state’s government.

Susanville was founded in 1887 by J.D.Susan, who named the town after his daughter Susan. The town rapidly grew and soon had a population of over 500 people. In 1916, the Susanville-Oasis Thermal bath house was built, which became one of the first thermal baths in California. In 1930, the Western Electric Company constructed a power plant in Susanville, which helped to spur economic development in the town. In 1951,Susanville State Prison opened as the first state prison in California. The prison closed in 1995 but is still standing and contains many interesting artifacts from its time.
The first permanent European settlement in Susanville was founded on July 4, 1853 by Hiram Bingham and his wife Catharine. The town was named forSusanville, California, a small village in central California which had been established as a white settlements by the Mission Santa Fe Railroad in 1849.
