The Navy has a long and rich history in Susanville. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1821 as Anza de San Francisco, after they arrived in California. In 1865, the first American naval ship, USS Constitution, arrived in Susanville to help with the Union-California War. The city was renamed Naval Base Susanville in 1920 after Rear Admiral George H. Wainwright, Commander of US Fleet Forces Europe and Commander-in-Chief Pacific Ocean Fleet from 1919 to 1921. In 1941, Naval Station Pier 21 became the first naval base outside of Japan when it opened. The station served as homeport for USS Enterprise (CVN-70) during World War II until she was decommissioned in 1945 and sold to Japan. The navy also operated an airbase at Naval Air Station Point Loma from 1949 to 1954 before it closed down due to budget cuts. However, the airport still hosts various military events every year such as flyovers by C-130s and helicopters while firefighters fight wildfires on April 8th! In 1969, the US Navy's new super carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 70) became available at Naval Base Pier 21 after her commissioning ceremony at NAS Norfolk. She served as anchor of Commodore Perry's visiting fleet throughout 1969 and 1970 before making her way back home across the Pacific Ocean for another season of operations off our coast of Japan! Enterprise spent 1971–1972 conducting drills with Singapore's Republic Navy before returning north for a summer overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard; this allowed her crew time away from port duties for a more extended cruise.* She made headlines around world when she towed Dutch Prime Minister Helmut Kohl ashore during his visit to Seattle on July 7th 1972 for a groundbreaking ceremony for Terminal Island North - that would become King Harbor later that year!* This additional stop helped make Tacoma one of America's most popular tourist destinations – not only did people come see their favorite celebrities or politicians but also local fishermen looking for extra income!* Meanwhile back at Naval Base Pier 21 things were happening behind the scenes: maintenance crews were hard at work repairing Enterprise' s hull damage sustained during her maiden voyage; meanwhile Commandant Forrest Epps was busy training his new First Class Petty Officers/Enlisted Men who would serve aboard Enterprise throughout her many deployments…. In 1976*, Commodore Perry's successor Rear Admiral Harry Wohlkopf assumed command of NAS Susanville*. After serving as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron Eighteen (DESRON 18), he took over command of US Fleet Forces Europe headquartered at Portsmouth England while Commodore Perry continued his holiday schedule.*Wohlkopf played an important role in providing security guarantees accompanying President Gerald Ford onhis historic tripto BeijingChina fall 1974.* He also spearheaded Operation Neptune Spear which used force if necessarysto expel Iranian Marines from Lebanon.* Finally *after 11 years stationed here* Wohlkopf retired effective September 1st 1978(* *). Captain John Filippenko relieved him effective October 5th 1978(* *). After retirement Captain Filippenko started working part time nights shift on pier 22(* *). During this time he met his wife Anna who worked part time dayshift cleaning up etc inside ship (* *. It is interesting that Captain Filippenko had originally been chosen to succeed Captian John Poulos who retired effective January 1st 1984(* [*). The area around Susanville was rich in minerals and gold deposits and was soon known as the "Gilded Age Capital of the World." The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location, its infrastructure, and its population of miners. By 1907, Susanville had more than 6,000 residents. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson delivered a speech in which he called for American investment in Europe. This led to increased demand for goods exported from Susanville and other Californian towns such as Fresno. During World War II, Susanville played an important role in supporting the war effort by providing housing for soldiers and their families. Between 1942-1945, the town's population reached over 20,000 people. After the war ended, many of these residents moved out of Susanville into newer areas within California or into new states altogether. In recent years, much attention has been given to Susanville's history by local historians and members of the public alike. Recently there have been several preservation projects launched in order to help preserve some of the town's notable features including its architecture and infrastructure; as well as its cultural heritage. Additionally, there are plans underway to bring back some aspects of community life such as annual summer festivals that date back to 1886
On July 4, 1851, the first post office in Susanville was established. On October 9, 1871, the town received its own telephone system and on November 15, 1881 it had its first store. The population of Susanville grew gradually during the early years; however, in 1907 there were only 432 residents. However, by 1920 the population had reached 1,596 and by 1930 it was over 3,000. In 1942 the United States military installed a radar station in Susanville and began tracking Japanese bombers operating out of China. This led to an increase in civilian development as businesses opened up to take advantage of new opportunities created by World War II. In 1957Susanville became an incorporated city with a mayor-council form of government. In 1984 it merged with nearby Welchsport to become the third largest city in California after San Francisco and Los Angeles
