It is located on the eastern border of Kern County and is bordered by Bakersfield to the north, Oildale to the east, and Primm to the south. The name "Tehachapi" means "place where cattle were pastured." The first Europeans to visit Tehachapi were Spanish settlers in 1777. In 1846, gold was discovered near Tehachapi and quickly became a center for mining operations. By 1870, most of the mines had been abandoned but a few remain today. The post office at Tehachapi was established in 1872. Today, there are several small businesses which continue to provide essential services to the community including: churches (Anglican and Catholic), schools (grades K-12), pharmacies (CVS and Walgreens), restauraunts (Chili’s Mexican restaurant and Mexicano Pizza), water supplies (City Water main provides service) as well as numerous homes with their own individual gardens that maintain a rural feel while still enjoying all modern amenities such as cable TV, internet access, etc.

Tehachapi is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Tehachapi were the Ohlone people who lived on the east side of the Butte River. They used to catch salmon and sell it to other Native Americans. In 1834, Mexican traders founded a trading post here called Rancho Tehachaipa on the edge of what is now Tehachapi Valley. The post was abandoned in 1836 because of strong Mexican resistance against American settlement west of Mexico City. In 1839, John Crain established a ferry across the Butte River which allowed goods and passengers from Stockton to cross into Kern County for shipment to Los Angeles or Sacramento. This ferry service stopped operations in 1849 because of changes in river conditions and competition from railroads. He also ranched here until his death in 1888 at age 86 years old while living near present-day Healdsburg with his wife Lillie Ransom Crain (1863-1951). ranch hands worked him hard during these tough times by loading their horses onto wagons and carrying them three miles upriver to market each day; he earned his nickname "the toughest man around." Mrs. Crain continued running her dairy farm until her death in 1951; it continues today as one of Kern County's most popular attractions with over 900 visitors per day! circa 1880
