Tehachapi, California is located in the Mojave Desert of eastern California. The population was estimated to be 4,500 in 2000 and has grown steadily since then. The area has been inhabited by various groups for thousands of years, including the Ohlone, Mono and Peninsular Malay Tribes. The first Europeans to arrive were Spanish missionaries in 1821. In 1846, gold was discovered in the area and a rush began to develop the land. By 1850, there were over 100 businesses operating in Tehachapi. However, it was not until 1872 that an agricultural community developed around the town of Tehachapi Rancho San Pedro de Atascadero. By 1915, however, mining had ceased and most of the town had been destroyed by fire or moving cattle herds across the desert surface water channels that now form Tehachapi Creek. The town again came into existence when oil was found near present-day Kern County in 1938 and a oil refinery was established at Healdsburg within minutes of discovering it. In 1951–1952 a new dam was built along Tehachapi Creek to provide flood control for nearby towns such as Atascadero and Bakersfield; however this project also resulted in significant destruction to some homes on adjacent hillsides downstream from the creek bed. In 1957 a new school district was created out of parts of several old districts which had lost their funding because they no longer met state requirements for enrollment levels or facilities adequacy; these districts included Healdsburg Unified School District #2 (now part of East Bay Unified School District), Pahrump Valley Union High School District #1 (now part of Riverside City Unified School District), Rancho San Pedro de Atascadero Union High School District #2 (now part of San Bernardino County Union High School District) and Owens Valley Union High SchoolDistrict #1 (now part of Mono County). A concrete high school building called “Edwin Jaffe Technical Institute” replaced an earlier wooden building which served as both an elementary school and gymnasium before it burned down on October 1st 1959ironically just three days after its opening day School district boundaries have changed many times throughout its history but overallTehachapi has always been one large consolidated district with multiple schools serving all residents within walking distance
Tehachapi is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,847 at the 2010 census. It is west of Fresno and east of Stockton. The first permanent settler in Tehachapi Valley was William Humble in 1859. He named the valley for his hometown of Tecumseh, Michigan. Humble built his ranch on the east side of the valley after he acquired title to Rancho Tehachapi from Manuel Nieto in 1866. On October 1, 1870, during California's Gold Rush era, prospector John Sutter discovered gold near present-day Tehachapi and named it Sutterville after him. In 1871, Jesse Jameson and his brother John discovered coal and ore at what is now known as Coal Hill within Tehachapi Valley; these discoveries led to increased traffic through the area and helped spur development around town since businesses could bring their goods directly to market rather than having to travel far into surrounding counties. By 1880, Tehachapi had a population of 578 people; however by 1890 it had shrunk to just 151 people due largely to economic reasons such as decreased access to water supplies and limited transport options available within Kern County at that time
