Tehachapi is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about an hour east of San Francisco. It is part of the Kern County seat and has a population of approximately 9,000. The community was founded in 1887 by George Tehachapi, Sr., his wife Nancie and their son George Tehachapi Jr. The original homestead was located on the east side of Highway 99 near what is now known as White Sands Lake. In 1902, George Tehachapi III donated land to build a school and post office. The first building was built on what is now the north side of town, and the first teacher was Mrs. Lillian Hood from 1908-1910. In 1922, Tehachapi incorporated as a village with a population of about 100 people. Tehachapi is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 16,581 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Tehachapi Pass in Sequoia National Park. It lies on the San Joaquin River and it is close to the cities of Fresno and Bakersfield. The first people to live in Tehachapi were the Mono Indians who built settlements near present-day Tehachapi Creek and Sahuarita Springs in 1848. They were replaced by Yokuts in 1863 because they could not compete with ranching operations led by Mexicans. In 1871, Charles Goodyear founded an oil well at Cottonwood Wells near present-day Tehachapi Creek. In 1892, Goodyear established his own small town called Torrance about 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Tehachapi Creek. That year, Goodyear donated land to build a school and store northwest of Tehachaponi Lake which became known as Goodyearville after him. Today, that area is home to the community of Chavez Ravine Elementary School and its adjacent Campground/ Recreational Area covering over . The San Joaquin Valley Railroad reached Tehachapi in 1914 from Fresno via Red Bluff Junction; however, no train ever stopped there until 1971 when Amtrak's Acela Express service arrived from New York City through Chico Station making it possible for locals to travel into Sacramento without leaving their homes or communities. On July 10th 1969 President Richard Nixon announced that America had entered World War II as part ofOperation Neptune’s Spear underthe command of General Douglas MacArthur Jr., located at Camp Pendleton – about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Tarapaca Junction on I-5 just outside Los Angeles’ city limits!
