At this time there were no settlements withinTehachapi Valley other than El Cajon which had been founded by Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on January 24, 1777). The Army also built a road leading to Rancho San Bernardino which became known as "the Red Road" because it was one of only two roads open to settlers west of Sacramento during those days (the other being "the Butterfield Overland Mail Route"). In 1870, Colonel Augustus Fetterman took over command of Rancho San Bernardino and continued expanding the ranch into what is now western Kern County. In 1871 he started construction on what is now called Fetterman Barracks and named it after Colonel Augustus Fetterman himself (he later moved it to nearby Bakersfield). From here General Pershing could lead his army across country with ease due to come highways and railways that had been created just for this purpose. In 1886 Captain John Peebles purchased 1/2 mile of land east of present day Tehachapi City limits for use as an armory and rifle range known today as Fort Simcoe National Monument (#1015). This addition greatly increased firepower for local farmers who would have to compete against larger cattle ranchers across central California who enjoyed access to rifles manufactured abroad such as Winchester firearms imported by Americans such as Levi Strauss Company founder Jacob Weitzel . Captain Peebles also built a house at #1069 Main Street near today's old Post Office building which still stands today (it has since been replaced by a tractor shed). Just south of where Captain Peebles' house currently stands lies another fortification built by Major General Edwin Momyer during World War II: Camp Cooke #1 located about two miles northeast off I-5 between State Route 159th Street & SR 164th Street; Camp Cooke #2 located about one mile northwest off I-5 between State Route 159th Street & SR 164thStreet; both camps are currently used for storage purposes by the Department of Defense .

Tehachapi is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,531 at the 2010 census. The townsite of Tehachapi was first located near the present-day town of Chowchilla on the Kern River in 1859. A post office was established at Tehachapi in 1861, and it remained in operation until 1911. In 1899, the name of the town changed to its current form when it amalgamated with nearby Forks to form the new city of Chowchilla. In 1902, a water tower and pipeline were constructed through Tehachapi Canyon by Southern Pacific Railway Company assets to provide water for local farmers. The original village center was built on high ground east of present day Chowchilla and included a Masonic Lodge and two churches (the First Congregationalist Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church). In 1905, an electric power plant was built southwest of town by Edison Electric Light Company assets to provide light for local farms and businesses. The plant continued to be used until 1933 when it closed down due to federal regulation that required all commercial lighting plants be operated using electricity from generators rather than traditional oil or gas lamps. In 1913, Tehachapi High School opened as one of many public schools opened across Kern County following passage of state legislation creating public education throughout California. It served students from grades 9-12 through 1959; however after that year it moved into its current building which is now part of Chico Unified School Districts campus . In 1923, Hacienda Hotel & Casino opened as one of several gambling venues open statewide following prohibition efforts during World War I .
